iNavX - Marine Chartplotter App Reviews

  • WAS the best app. No longer is!

The developers have just about ruined this once fantastic app. Navionics charts for iPads are $50 more than for iPhones! AIS Live is not live unless you have an AIS unit or radio installed on your vessel. Charts have shot up in price. Pop-ups and surveys have added to the misery. At one time I advocated this app to all my navigation students; now I tell them there are better alternatives. What a shame!
  • Don’t buy this app

I did not believe the previous reviews and purchased this. It is all the prior observations of being hard to use. Also the resolution on the IPAD is grainy and does not show very good detail.
  • Serious issues with Explorer Chartbooks for the Bahamas!!!

The Explorer Chartbooks are seriously - if not fatally flawed. It is very dangerous to rely on them for navigational purposes. If you download the “quilted” charts, you have to individually drill down to each and every detailed chart or they will not be loaded on your device (I have these charts on two separate iPads for redundancy purposes, as well as the printed chartbooks). That means you’ll be coming into a channel - the vast majority of which are unmarked - and run the risk of finding you don’t have the detailed chart on your device. If you download the charts individually, then GPS positioning does not work on them. What you would expect from iNavX, i.e. realtime GPS position, bearing, speed, location, etc data will likely not be displayed. In one instance off of Freeport, it was even worse....it showed me in depths of 300-400 meters, when my depth sounders (I have two independent ones for redundancy) both showed depths of 40-50 feet. It appears on the individual (not the “quilted” charts), GPS data is off by miles, which is why it doesn’t show up all on detailed charts. Fortunately I had Navionics charts on my B&G chart plotter, so I had a fallback to dead reckoning, which is very hazardous in the skinny and twisting channels of the Bahamas. This is such a serious flaw, I’ll be surprised if Explorer and iNavX aren’t sued if someone destroys their boat relying on these charts and app. I have used iNavX for years in US waters without an issue. This is an app-killer.
  • Automatic updates confusing

I took advantage of the automatic chart renewal thinking this would make things easier but the chart page still reads”expired” and I can’t find a way to download and update. I’ve written iNavX but support is slow in coming.
  • Great App!

Really appreciate being able to navigate and confirm my location using this app and my phone or iPad. Makes my travels much safer and efficient. Could be a little better, the pointing of the vessel, it often it shows me aimed in a different direction than I am, however i just use the corse line to make sure it’s aimed where I want to go.

  • The One to Have

We have used INavX for 10,000 nm of travel, mostly on the ICW and adjacent waters. Because it used NOAA charts, it works well in part because we always have a paper chart handy just in case. At first, our blue water sailing friend was skeptical, but after two days he agreed that with INavX and an IPad, there is no need for a chart plotter.
  • Great App

One of the best compliments to my onboard systems
  • Too expensive for what it offers

Things it is missing: * quilted NOAA charts without spending $20 * Navionics charts cost twice as much as the Navionics app * Can’t show tides and currents in app or for any given time The UI isn’t very good compared to SEAIQ or Navionics. I got this because it has support for NMEA instrumentation, but there are other apps which do that and offer better charting at a much lower cost.
  • Drastically down hill

This used to be an a+ app but unfortunately it has just gotten slower and slower. The latest version running on an iPhone X is unusable. Save your money and get something else.
